Accuracy of CT colonography in the preoperative staging of colon cancer: a prospective study of 217 patients

2019

Aim The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the accuracy of computed tomography colonography (CTC) in the preoperative localization and TN staging of colon cancer. CTC can be an effective technique for preoperative evaluation of colon cancer and could facilitate the selection of high-risk patients who may benefit from neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Method This was a prospective observational study conducted at a single tertiary-care centre. It involved 217 patients (225 tumours) who had colon cancer and underwent preoperative CTC and elective colectomy. The radiologist determined the TNM stage using postprocessing software with multiplanar images and virtual colonoscopy. The following c…

The Value of Sonography and Lymphography in the Detection of Retroperitoneal Metastases in Testicular Tumors

1979

Lymphography has led to falsely negative or falsely positive diagnoses in 10 to 45 per cent of the cases of testicular tumor metastases reported in the literature. In our comparative study of lymphography and sonography in the preoperative staging of 29 malignant testicular tumors lymphography was accurate in 58.5 per cent of the cases, while sonography had an accuracy rate of 82.5 per cent. Sonography was superior to lymphography in the evaluation of hilar lymph node metastases and their extent, as well as for routine checkups after lymphadenectomy or irradiation.

Avoiding Pitfalls in the Interpretation of Gadoxetic Acid-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging

2016

Gadoxetic acid is extensively used in the following 3 main clinical situations: characterization of small nodules in patients with cirrhosis, preoperative staging of liver metastases, and characterization of incidentally discovered focal liver lesions. Owing to the rapid entry of gadoxetic acid into hepatocytes, the traditional features of liver tumors are modified on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, especially during delayed phase sequences. Thus, although the added value of gadoxetic acid for the detection and characterization of focal liver lesions is now clear, its unique pharmacokinetics as well as the presence of mimicking and atypical lesions may lead to misdiagnoses. The goal of thi…

Adherence to Guidelines among Italian Urologists on Imaging Preoperative Staging of Low-Risk Prostate Cancer: Results from the MIRROR (Multicenter It…

2011

Objective. A number of evidence-based guidelines for diagnosis and management of prostate cancer have been published. The aim of this study is to evaluate the adherence of Italian urologists to the guidelines concerning the preoperative imaging staging of prostate cancer.Methods. In October 2007 a multicentric observational perspective study called Multicentric Italian Report on Radical prostatectomy Outcome and Research (MIRROR) was started in 135 Italian urology centers. Recruitment was closed in December 2008 and 2,408 cases were collected. In this paper we have taken into consideration all examinations carried out for preoperative imaging staging, evaluating compliance with the recommen…

Endoluminal ultrasonic examination of sessile polyps and early carcinomas of the rectum

1989

The results of conventional endosonographic techniques in the assessment of early carcinomas and sessile polyps of the rectum have been unsatisfactory. We therefore developed a new technique in which the rectal cavity is filled directly with water. Using this technique, the anatomy of small rectal tumors is preserved and the layers of the rectal wall are easier to differentiate, especially with a 10-MHz scanner. The clinical results in 66 patients demonstrate that this new technique is very accurate in the preoperative staging of adenomas and T1-carcinomas of the rectum.

Hochauflösende Dünnschicht-CT zum präoperativen Staging beim Rektumtumor: Vergleich mit der endo-luminalen Sonographie und der Histologie

1990

Rectal carcinomas are amongst the most common malignant tumours. The aim of this work was to determine whether high resolution CT with thin sections (1 mm) can provide satisfactory delineation of perirectal tumour infiltration. Correct determination of local tumour spread was possible in four out of nine patients and distinction between those tumours confined to the rectal wall and those infiltrating the perirectal tissues was possible in four out of eight patients.
